Nice weather, wrong time of year

Don't get me wrong by my title, I love warm weather, but this week has topped the charts. We've been between 75 and 80 degrees this week. I got to wear a summer dress to work today! Needless to say, I've put the pea coat away for a couple of days. However, all of this feels really silly with Christmas lights, red bows, and garland all around. It's especially hard to listen to White Christmas on the radio (KCMS online of course!).

...I'm thinking if this doesn't change, the daffodils will bloom next week.

Last Written Test!

Today Ryan passed his last written exam in the flight program. This exam was for his commercial pilot's license. In the next couple of weeks he'll take his check ride. Once he completes and passes that he'll have just two more flight courses! These flight courses will be taken in a Cessna 206 much like the one he will, Lord willing, be flying in Togo one day. In courses 9 and 10 he'll work on some tactical and mountain flight. Wow! We have been here in North Carolina for 3 1/2 years and are almost finished! The day we got married, we never would have dreamed that we would be where we are today. Praise the Lord!

Speaking of North Carolina, today has been a typical NC "Indian Summer." The temperature today was somewhere in the 70's. That's quite a contrast to last week's freezing weather. I felt pretty silly coming to work today in my pea coat. You should have seen it. Windows all over the place were open. It was not hard at all to imagine that it was summertime outside. Ah, summertime, my favorite season!

Chocolate Peppermint Bark

I got this recipe from last year's December edition of Carolina Country Magazine

You'll need:
6 squares (1 ounces each) white baking chocolate
1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup crushed peppermint candies, divided

In a microwave safe bowl, melt white chocolate at 70% power; stir until smooth. Repeat with chocolate chips. Stir 6 tablespoons of crushed peppermint candies into each bowl. Drop white chocolate and semisweet chocolate in alternating spoonfuls onto a waxed paper-lined baking sheet.

With a metal spatula (or a butter knife), cut through chocolate to swirl, spreading to 1/4-inch thickness. Sprinkle with remaining crushed candies. Chill until firm. Break into pieces. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

With this recipe, I finally found a useful way to use my overabundance of Christmas tins.

Life's Tough (an email message I recieved today)

ONE Recently, when I went to McDonald's I saw on the menu that you could have an order of 6, 9 or 12 Chicken McNuggets. I asked for a half dozen nuggets. "We don't have half dozen nuggets," said the teenager at the counter. "You don't?" I replied. "We only have six, nine, or twelve," was the reply. "So I can't order a half dozen nuggets, but I can order six?" "That's right." So I shook my head and ordered six McNuggets

TWO I was checking out at the local Wal-Mart with just a few items and the lady behind me put her things on the belt close to mine. I picked up one of those "dividers" that they keep by the cash register and placed it between our things so they wouldn't get mixed. After the girl had scanned all of my items, she picked up the "divider", looking it all over for the bar code so she could scan it. Not finding the bar code she said to me, "Do you know how much this is?" I said to her "I've changed my mind, I don't think I'll buy that today." She said "OK," and I paid her for the things and left. She had no clue to what had just happened.

THREE A lady at work was seen putting a credit card into her floppy drive and pulling it out very quickly. When I inquired as to what she was doing, she said she was shopping on the Internet and they kept asking for a credit card number, so she was using the ATM "thingy."

FOUR I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her car. "Do you need some help?" I asked. She replied, "I knew I should have replaced the battery to this remote door unlocker. Now I can't get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to a distant convenience store) would have a battery to fit this?" "Hmmm, I dunno. Do you have an alarm, too?" I asked. "No, just this remote thingy," she answered, handing it and the car keys to me. As I took the key and manually unlocked the door, I replied, "Why don't you drive over there and check about the batteries. It's a long walk."

FIVE Several years ago, we had an Intern who was none too swift. One day she was typing and turned to a secretary and said, "I'm almost out of typing paper. What do I do?" "Just use copier machine paper," the secretary told her. With that, the intern took her last remaining blank piece of paper, put it on the photocopier and proceeded to make five "blank" copies.

SIX I was in a car dealership a while ago, when a large motor home was towed into the garage. The front of the vehicle was in dire need of repair and the whole thing generally looked like an extra in "Twister." I asked the manager what had happened. He told me that the driver had set the "cruise control" and then went in t he back to make a sandwich.

SEVEN My neighbor works in the operations department in the central office of a large bank. Employees in the field call him when they have problems with their computers. One night he got a call from a woman in one of the branch banks who had this question: "I've got smoke coming from the back of my terminal. Do you guys have a fire downtown?"

EIGHT Police in Radnor , Pa. interrogated a suspect by placing a metal colander on his head and connecting it with wires to a photocopy machine. The message "He's lying" was placed in the copier, and police pressed the copy button each time they thought the suspect wasn't telling the truth. Believing the "lie detector" was working, the suspect confessed.

NINE A mother calls 911 very worried asking the dispatcher if she needs to take her kid to the emergency room, the kid was eating ants. The dispatcher tells her to give the kid some Benadryl and it should be fine . The mother says, I just gave him some ant killer.....
Dispatcher: Rush him in to emergency room!

Life is tough . It's tougher if you're just having one of those days!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! Thank the Lord we still have a season worth celebrating.

Remember Christmas? Remember waking up early on Christmas morning, sneaking out to the smell of the fresh pine Christmas tree, crawling under the tree to turn the lights on, and waiting ever so impatiently for your parents to wake up? Remember the Christmas program with the manger and the little biblically incorrect blue eyed baby doll. Remember the angel costumes with the itchy garland halos (if you're blond that was likely your costume every year when you really wanted to be Mary)?

What is Christmas all about? Certainly, we know what the holidays are all about. Presents of course. Let's just be honest. Why else would all the stores have so many sales and why is the traffic around the mall so awful this time of year? Presents. The world tries to fool itself by saying that it's all about spending time with family, but that point is not well argued at all. Haven't you heard the commercial about how much of a drag it is to "have to go see the in-laws?" Don't give me holidays. I don't want any part of such a contradictory holiday.

Remember the name? Remember Jesus? Remember? Often times I don't. It's very easy to get caught up in the commercialism of the season. I catch myself evaluating every commercial to see if what they're advertising is really what I want for Christmas. Could I ask for that and not hurt the budget too badly? What I remember is that December 25th is called Christmas, but in all this craziness about Christmas being called anything other than Christmas, I have been reminded that I have a reason for celebrating Christmas as Christmas. I celebrate a Savior who is worth far more than my temporary, covetous wants. He's worth far more than just His birthday. For unto us is born this day,... a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. A Savior. A self sacrificing, all powerful, loving-above-all-other-loves, Savior Jesus Christ. The Savior who died for me. I have been saved for years and I still can't grasp the fact that Jesus died for me. Knowing that I remain safely in His arms, I still long to hug Jesus. Say the name again and remember it this Christmas.

Jesus.

Pre-Winter Blues

I'm not a huge fan of winter, which means when fall rolls around I try to enjoy every last drop of warm weather before I have to freeze to death for several months. The first fall I worked at Piedmont, I noticed a tree out my window and across the parking lot. When all the other trees' leaves turned colors, "my tree" kept its beautiful green. I also noticed that in the spring it was the first to grow leaves again. Well this fall, they cut my poor tree down. Why? I don't know. Why do we cut any trees down? I get so frustrated when people cut perfectly fine trees down, not that I'm a tree hugger, but in a sense I am. Anyway, this is not my fall. Usually, by about now I'm trying to get excited about Thanksgiving and Christmas, but this year, I'm not really that thrilled at all yet.

Today we had our first frost. Brrrrr! So tonight I brought out my fall and winter clothes. Fall and winter clothes are so dark and gloomy. Also, the majority of my fall and winter clothes require the use of nylons. Yuck and Brrr! I once tried size Q to see if it would be better around my waist, but even size Q felt like a rubber band and they slid down my legs and made me look like a granny so needless to say, I ditched that plan.

Anyway, there might be some good things about winter... ...like Charlie Brown Christmas! ...or...Pea Coats ... or ... uh ... snow! but I haven't seen it in a long time. Or... uh ... hmm ... cranberry sauce! ...Oooo, I just thought of one I really, really like and that's Christmas trees. I love pretty ornaments. Hmmm, maybe I'll be excited about that. Only about a month and a half and I can have a sweet smelling Christmas tree in my home. Now that is something I can look forward to!
